GATLINBURG - A pot of grits simmers on the propane stove, and coffee is brewing on all six burners. There are 40 guests to feed. Breakfast at LeConte Lodge will be served in an hour. This is Chris Virden's favorite time of the day. Working by kerosene lanterns, he bakes 53 biscuits, then heats up a batch of hot chocolate. As daylight creeps into the kitchen, he flips pancakes and begins making scrambled eggs and Canadian bacon. (15 Comments) | Full story »

Elk drawing more visitors

The elk the National Park Service released in Cataloochee Valley of the Great Smokies are doing something for Cataloochee that nothing else has done.They're drawing more than twice as many visitors to the remote and lovely place as came before the elk were released. In fact, they may be bringing more people than those who live nearby outside the park want. Full story »

U.S. 441 closed for night because of snow, ice on Newfound Gap
